How is it that this is done by NCAA DIV IA (aka.. FCS) but for (FBS) its "too long"

And to add fuel to the fire..............read this article.... they are EXPANDING the playoffs from 16 to 20 teams. So basically... we dont care about our student-athletes in Divisiion IA (aka..FCS) and II and III and so on....only our DI (aka.. FBS) teams... they are our babies and they need all the rest and attention they can get. Thats pathetic.


You need to take the ACC Champion, Big 10 Champion, Big 12 Champion, Big East Champion, PAC-10 Champion and SEC Champion and give all of these teams automatic qualifying berths in a national playoff. Pick 10 more teams from the BCS field and have a national playoff. You could even keep the bowls in place for this as well... and the bowls for once would actually mean something. The first round would be bowl games. The round of 8 would mean entrance into the NCAA Football Elite 8 Championship Round. Then a Final Four and then a National Championship game.

For instance... it could be like this:

ACC - Georgia Tech
Big 10 - Ohio State
Big 12 - Texas
SEC - Florida
PAC-10 - Oregon
Big East - Cincinnati

Then you could choose the teams based on BCS standings as who are the highest ranked teams left.

Alabama
TCU
Boise State
Iowa
Penn State
Virginia Tech
LSU
BYU
Pittsburgh
Oregon State

1. Florida* vs. 16. Oregon State
2. Texas* vs. 15. Pittsburgh

The FCS playoff format is 16 teams, with eight teams being automatic qualifiers as conference champions, and eight at-large berths are awarded. The tournament field is selected by a NCAA appointed committee made up of athletic directors from select FCS schools that represent each region of the country.

The top four teams in the playoff field are seeded 1-4, and are automatically granted hosting rights to every game they play as long as their seed holds up. The FCS Championship is played at a pre determined neutral site (Chattanooga, TN).

The rest of the 12 teams in the field are unseeded, and teams are usually matched up based on regional proximity, with hosting rights granted based on bidding and projected gate receipts, as well as record, conference affiliation and strength of schedule. If two unseeded teams meet in subsequent rounds of the playoff tournament, the team that presents the highest monetary bid to the NCAA is awarded hosting rights.

The eight FCS automatic playoff bids are awarded to the conference champion of the following conferences:

-Big Sky Conference
-Colonial Conference
-Mid East Athletic Conference
-Missouri Valley Conference (formerly the Gateway Conference)
-Ohio Valley Conference
-Patriot League
-Southern Conference
-Southland Conference
(The SWAC and Ivy League do not participate in the FCS Playoff tournament)

The other eight FCS playoff teams are at-large berths, and have ALMOST always been selected from eight conferences that are awarded automatic qualifiers. The lone exception has been Cal Poly, which plays in the Great West Conference, having been awarded two playoff berths (2005 and 2008). So NCAAF Fan was wrong in that respect.

The FCS playoffs commence the week following the last week of the regular season, which is Thanksgiving weekend, and the FCS Championship played the third week of December.

Starting in 2010, the FCS playoff format will change. The tournament field will be expanded from 16 to 20 teams, and the Big South Conference and Northeast Conference will have automatic qualifiers, as well as two more at-large berths.

The top 12 seeded teams in the FCS tournament will be awarded a bye week, while teams seeded 13-20 will play off to narrow the field to 16 teams. The FCS Semifinals will be played the third week of December (when the FCS Championship game has historically been played), and the FCS National Championship will be played the night before the BCS National Championship at a site TBD in early January.

With the bowls it'll never happen. A plus one format maybe, but nothing more...it'd take too much time cuz you can't earnestly prepare to play 2 football games in 3 days...no way. It works for basketball but not football.

Who's saying you have to prepare for two games in three days? You move the dates of whatever bowl game it is to the same weekend and then play the next week like you have been doing all year. What you would have to do is do away with conference tie-ins with the bowls and make the later bowls the second (elite 8) and third (final four) round games. The bowls won't know who they are getting till the week before. The problem here would be travel for the teams and fans. It is easy to do a playoff system with the lower divisions because they don't have the fan bases that travel with them like the D1 teams, they are gonna have about the same crowds and people traveling to watch them. Fans of the top teams won't be able to travel across the country week to week to follow their team in this type of playoff system. You can't argue that they do it during the season because there are only a limited number of seats alloted to the visiting team by the home team and whatever the visitors don't sell they send back to the home team and they sell them to their fans, with the playoff you would split the seating evenly and it would be nearly impossible to sell 30-40K tickets to an away game (possibly halfway or further across the country) 2 weeks in a row.

Thats the biggest problem, and I try to tell people the same thing.

Fans simply cant afford to travel from LA one week, to Oxford, MS the next, then end up at Blacksburg.

Biggin is right. As much as I would like to see a playoff you are not going to expect college kids to be able to afford to travel for 4 weeks. Sure some of the alumni would but you would have a lot of empty seats. A lot of teams just don't travel well, and if they don't travel well in regular season the chances of them traveling well in playoff's in December slim. For the home / high seeded teams it would be a great thing.

and if you want more games, youd have to add more locations, then you run into the travel problem
